What Are Faux Beams?
Just like regular beams with all the rustic charm but without the support. They're perfect for open spaces that need visual depth. The faux wood ceiling beams are usually crafted from high density polyurethane foam. They're resistant to damage from light, water, and other extreme weather elements
đź› Materials
Ekena Millwork faux beam (size: 5 ½" W x 7 ½" H x 192" L)
Mounting blocks (wood pieces cut to fit inside the beam)
Screws + drill
Stud finder
Measuring tape + level
Optional: construction adhesive (for permanent installs), touch-up paint/caulk
📏 Step 1: Plan Your Layout
Decide how many beams you want and where they’ll go. Will they run parallel or cross each other?
Use a stud finder to mark the ceiling joists. These will be your anchors for the mounting blocks.
Measure the room length to ensure the beam fits perfectly. If it’s too long, no worries—you can always cut it down!
✂️ Step 2: Prep the Beam
Now, let’s get that beam ready!
If necessary, cut the beam to size using a fine-tooth saw.
Don’t forget to touch up the cut ends with matching stain or paint. This will give you a seamless look!
🔨 Step 3: Install Mounting Blocks
Let’s get those mounting blocks in place!
Cut your wood blocks slightly smaller than the inside width of the beam.
Screw the blocks directly into the ceiling joists at intervals of every 3–4 feet.
These blocks will act as anchors for the hollow beam to slide over.
🧲 Step 4: Attach the Beam
Time to bring it all together!
Lift the faux beam and slide it over the mounting blocks.
Secure it by screwing through the sides of the beam into the blocks.
If you’re renting, consider using fewer screws. You can patch the holes later or rely on a snug fit with removable adhesive strips.
đź•’ Time & Cost
Time: 2–3 hours for one beam.
Cost: Around $200–$250 per beam (depending on the finish).
Effort: This project is beginner-friendly and requires only basic tools.
🌟 Enjoy Your New Look!
You’ll love the lightweight durability of polyurethane. Plus, faux beams add cozy heritage vibes to any space.
Caution:
Keep in mind faux wood is in fact lighter and easier to install but it's not strong enough to actually be a support material. But it sure does add character!
