They are great for spaces like bedrooms, dining areas, entry ways, and theatre rooms. Today, you will see it in modern, coastal, transitional, minimalist interiors and boutique hotels.

Quick Tips -

  1. Paint it all the same color to have a clean, continuous and modern feel. This will give more emphasis on the lighting shown in the first image below. But if you're sticking with traditional - that's fine! Use a darker color for the molding for drama.

  2. Add on the layers of lightings like lamps, sconces, and accent light to complete the inviting atmosphere.

See the difference? Modern versus Traditional.

Safety Note!

If your lighting installation requires new wiring, connection to a wall switch, or modifications to existing electrical systems, follow local building codes and consult a licensed electrician when necessary. Always verify that your chosen LED system is compatible with the power supply and dimmer controls you plan to use.

How To in 5 Steps!

Step 1: Plan Your Layout

Determine how wide you want the perimeter border to be. Most faux tray ceilings leave a border of approximately 6–12 inches around the room's perimeter, though larger rooms may benefit from a wider design.

Use painter's tape to visualize the layout before making any cuts.

Step 2: Build the Perimeter Frame

Install your 1x4 or 1x6 boards around the ceiling perimeter according to your layout lines.

This frame creates the drop needed to support the crown molding and conceal the lighting.

For most installations, a drop of approximately 3–6 inches work best. This provides enough room for the molding profile and allows the LED lighting to spread evenly across the ceiling.

Use a level frequently to ensure the frame remains straight and consistent.

Step 3: Install the Crown Molding

Attach the crown molding to the perimeter frame so that the upper edge sits below the ceiling, creating a concealed channel behind it.

This hidden space is what allows the lighting to remain out of sight while illuminating the ceiling above.

Carefully measure and test-fit corners before fastening the molding in place. Depending on your molding profile, corner cuts may require compound angles rather than simple 45-degree cuts.

Take your time here—the cleaner the corners, the more custom the finished project will look.

Step 4: Add the Cove Lighting

Install warm-white LED strip lighting behind the crown molding on the upper ledge of the frame.

Position the LEDs so they shine upward toward the ceiling rather than outward into the room.

For the most inviting atmosphere, choose lighting in the:

* 2700K range for a warm, cozy glow

* 3000K range for a slightly brighter, modern appearance

Consider adding a dimmer or smart lighting system so you can adjust the mood throughout the day.

Step 5: Finish the Details

Fill nail holes, caulk all seams, and sand any rough areas.

Prime and paint the molding and frame to match the ceiling for a seamless appearance or choose a subtle contrast color to highlight the architectural detail.

Once everything is dry, switch on the lighting and enjoy the transformation!
